Against the Gates of Hell

An excerpt from Alfred Lord Tennyson's famous battle poem, Charge of the Light Brigade:

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

Jesus promised us that the gates of hell would not prevail against us, and as we charge against our foe we must not turn to the right or to the left.

Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil. (Pro 4:25-27)

"Therefore you shall be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. (Deu 5:32)

Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. (Jos 1:7-8)

On Sundays as we are going through 1 Kings we are talking about the need to Overcome lest we be overcome. Are you charging forward for the Lord? Will it be said of you, like it was said of young King Josiah?

And he [Josiah] did what was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
(2Ki 22:2)

Sometimes it can seem that we are riding through the valley of death, but there is no hell on earth that can overcome us if we stay in the saddle, keep our eyes on Him, and refuse to be turned to the left or to the right.

Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."
(Jos 1:9)

Yours in Him,
Pastor B.
